DAPHNE, Ala. — Boy Scouts from Troop 87 this Saturday will clean up the D’Olive Cemetery within Village Point Park Preserve.
D’Olive Cemetery has been around since 1814, Alfred Guarisco, Village Point chairman, said.
The University of South Alabama had agreed to conduct a study locating graves in the area on the condition that it was cleaned up, according to Guarisco.
“We don’t know where some of the burial plots are and this will help,” Guarisco said.
USA has a “ground-penetrating radar” machine that will be able to detect unmarked graves, he said. The city of Daphne owns a similar machine for detecting undergound pipes, he said.
There are 26 marked graves in D’Olive Cemetery, Guarisco said. The 800-acre site once was home to a plantation owned by Dominique D’Olive, who purchased the land in 1787.
Boy Scouts will work from about 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the site, Guarisco said.
The scouts will clean the brush and underbrush to prepare for the survey.
