Scouts celebrate popcorn, cake sales

DAPHNE, Ala. — Cub Scout Pack 87 recently held two events.

Pack 87 — about 50 first- through fifth-graders who participate in Tiger, Wolf,  Bear, Webelo I or Webelo II dens — had its popcorn sale with 43 scouts participating and total gross sales exceeding $18,000.

Sterling Clay, Webelo I scout, was recognized as the overall top salesman in the pack selling $1,711 in popcorn. Joseph Quint, Webelo I scout, selling $1,517, ranked second in overall popcorn sales. Trent McManus, Webelo I scout, rounded out the top three in sales with $1,342.

The annual Lad / Dad Cake Bake had two basic rules: the cake had to be baked and decorated by the scout and his dad, grandad or adult scouting partner; and everything in the cake and on the cake must be edible.

Thirty scouts participated in the annual event, which included scouts ranging from first grade through fifth grade in scout dens Tiger, Wolf, Bear, Webelo I and Webelo II.

Judging for this event was led by Sylvia Worcester of  Riley’s Catering in Daphne. Worcester was assisted by Stan Weiss, scout leader in Boy Scout Troop 87, and John Samson, former cub scout leader.  The three judges recognized the best cake from each den before awarding the “Wooden Spoon” trophy for the top three cakes in the pack.

Judging was based on the decorating talents of the scout-dad teams — not the cakes’ taste.

Scott Midkiff was awarded first place overall winner of the pack for his cake “The Camp.” Joseph Quint won second place overall in the pack for his cake “Compass.”  William Bailey took third place overall in the pack with his cake “The Pinewood Derby Crash.”

In addition to these overall pack awards, the judges recognized one scout for best cake from each den. Fabian LaPalme was awarded Best in Den for the first-grade Tigers. Camden Wilhelm was recognized for Best in Den from the second-graders in the Wolf Den.  Grant Rogers took home Best in Den among the third-graders in the Bear Den. Brandon Schaffer was awarded Best in Den among the fourth-graders in the Webelo I Den. Brewer Ayers was Best in Den for the fifth-grade scouts in the Webelo II Den.

The Cub Scout Pack 87 is sponsored by the Knights of Columbus Council No. 2737 in Daphne.
