The Schumann Music Club of Mobile is set to celebrate its 129th Anniversary Concert on Sunday, Feb. 4, 2024, at 2 p.m. The event will take place at the Fairhope Unitarian Fellowship, located at 1150 Fairhope Ave, and will feature a diverse program with performances on strings, winds, keyboard and vocals. Admission is free, and the concert is open to the public.

Founded in 1894 by Mobile women with a passion for musical art, the Clara Schumann Music Club aimed to promote and encourage cultural appreciation of music in the region. After 90 years, allowing men to join prompted a renaming to the Schumann Music Club. The club is affiliated with the Alabama Federation of Music Clubs and the National Federation of Music Clubs.

The organization's mission is to foster fine musical performance, support musical arts in the community, and mentor young musicians in their pursuit of excellence. While auditions were once required for membership, the club now extends invitations to anyone willing to support its mission and pay annual dues. Current members include numerous performing artists in the Mobile area.

The Schumann Music Club regularly organizes multiple free concerts throughout the year, including the Young Musicians Concert each spring. This particular event showcases the winners of auditions, where students compete for scholarships. The club's dedication to providing musical opportunities to the community remains a cornerstone of its 129-year legacy.
