You better not pout, you better not cry — Santa is coming to town.
Santa or his designated representative will be arriving in the town of Silverhill and the city of Robertsdale this weekend. Both communities are planning celebrations to welcome the “jolly old elf” to town.
On Friday, Dec. 5, Santa will make his appearance in the town of Silverhill during the town’s annual Christmas parade.
“At 6 p.m. the Silverhill Elementary Band under the direction of Suzy Vivar will play a collection of holiday tunes,” said Silverhill Utility and Court Clerk Amy Macon.
Macon added that the performance will be in the gazebo near Town Hall. At 6:30 p.m. the Silverhill Elementary Choir will perform at the same location.
While the students are performing, the Silverhill Christmas Parade will be forming up in the Silverhill Elementary parking lot. The parade begins at 7 p.m., and will run up Route 104 past Town Hall.
Macon estimates the parade will be short, “about 20 minutes,” but the highlight will be the arrival of one Mr. S. Claus on one of the Volunteer Fire Department trucks.
The next day, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. there will be a chance for youngsters to have their picture taken with Santa at that gazebo.
“Cathy Elgie is doing the photos,” said Macon, who added that the cost is $10 for two 5X7 photos.
“She’s been doing this for us for four or five years,” said Macon. Proceeds from the photos will be used to help maintain the town’s “Kid’s Park,” at First and South Avenue.
Santa and Mrs. Claus will make an appearance in Robertsdale the following evening at the Robertsdale Christmas Parade and the “Christmas in the Park” celebration at Honeybee Park.
“This is our ninth year, but the parade has been going on long before that,” said Sean McClay, secretary for the Robertsdale Rotary Club, which sponsors the festivities.
The parade is expected to have around 50 floats, and when all the cars, motorcycles, antique tractors are added up, McClay estimates there will be “70 to 100 units” in the parade. The floats will be judged and awards presented.
“We will start at the (Robertsdale) high school and proceed to the park,” said McClay. “I guess it’s going to be about an hour long.”
The Robertsdale Volunteer Fire Department and the Elsanor Volunteer Fire Department will join forces and have several siren-wailing units in the parade, McClay says.
After the parade, Santa and Mrs. Claus will pose for photos with true believers. There is no cost for the single photo. McClay added that the Elsanor Fire Department would be selling raffle tickets for a 2009 Harley-Davidson motorcycle.
“It’s gong to be a great event,” said McClay.
