Sandspur Band plans Orange Beach benefit concert

ORANGE BEACH, Ala  — The Sandspur Band will perform Friday at 7 p.m. in the second stories studio at Beach Cite in San Roc Cay.

The group’s mix of bluegrass and gospel has earned it the title of “the stained glass bluegrass band of Alabama.”

“It is truly a blessing to be able to use this facility in a way that both exposes the community to the vibrant local art scene and supports a great cause.” said Jim Coughlin, Executive Director of the Studios.

This Benefit Concert is hosted in support of a member of the Sirens of the Sea Mardi Gras Krewe who will be undergoing medical treatment. A suggested minimum donation of $15 will be accepted at the door. Due to limited space, reservations are suggested. The Sandspur Band has released three albums ‘Shine Your Light’, ‘Stained Glass Bluegrass’ and ‘Gloryland’. Learn more about these albums, the members of the group and the groups history at at www.thesandspurband.com.

The Sandspur Band, a Gulf Shores based Gospel Folk band, got it’s start in the summer of 2002 when Mel Middlebrooks and Clarence Bauer got together to pick a few tunes. Mel had just moved from Gardendale, Alabama where he had been involved in a home- bound music ministry with a couple of fellow church members. Once a week the small group would visit members of their church who were home-bound or shut-in because of sickness, age, etc. After joining the Gulf Shores United Methodist Church, Mel heard that Clarence was somewhat musically inclined, was retired and had some free time to devote to this idea. They immediately started working up a few songs and decided pretty quickly to add more members to the fun. Over time the group grew in membership and came to play at countless church concerts and benefits. They are well known for their uplifting music and their commitment to supporting good causes.
