Safer Place warming center to open in Foley with potential of winter weather

Posted

Though the weather forecast confidence for this weekend remains low a few days out to determine specific local impacts, a warming shelter will open in Foley on Saturday for people to use through Sunday morning.

According to the National Weather Service of Mobile, recent trends suggest a small but increasing chance for a brief wintry mix or light snow, primarily east of I-65, as a cold front moves through. Light rain Saturday evening may transition to a wintry mix overnight. Little to no accumulation is expected, though outcomes may change. Any impacts would likely be short-lived, according to the forecast as of Thursday midday.

The shelter will be at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church and open Saturday, Jan. 17, through Sunday, Jan, 18, beginning at 3 p.m. Saturday and closing at 10 a.m. Sunday, according to Jessica Waters, Baldwin County Emergency Management Agency public information officer and communications specialist.

If temperatures remain at or below freezing, the center will remain open until conditions improve.

According to the church, "pets are allowed as long as they are restrained and under the owner's control at all times. Cats should be in a carrier and dogs on leashes. "

Location: St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 506 N. Pine St., Foley, AL 36535 (Administration Building — not the Parish Hall; Signage will be posted on site.)

Hours: Saturday at 3 p.m. through Sunday at 10 a.m. (Extended hours possible if freezing temperatures persist.)

Meal service: Hot meals served at 6 p.m.

Inquiries: Call (251) 256-8202 (Please do not call the church office.)

Cots will be provided. Guests should bring their own bedding (blankets, pillows), medications and any personal comfort items they may need.
