SPANISH FORT, Ala. — With middle school looming in the fall, Rockwell Elementary School fifth-graders received a sendoff of their own Thursday while parents and teachers cheered the accomplishments of the 2010-11 school year.

“We had a very strong group this year, and we’re very proud of all our students, but there were several who set themselves apart,” said Rockwell Principal Robbie Owen.

Meanwhile, Spanish Fort Elementary School celebrated its Awards Day May 25, but Principal Becky Comer said providing a list of honorees would essentially name the entire student body.

“We recognize everything from outstanding spelling to participation in Citizenship Club and Media Club.  It works out that every child receives recognition of some sort,” said Comer.

Rockwell, however, singled out its fifth-graders and honored 10 Students of the Year — one boy and one girl from each of the five fifth-grade homerooms — for their outstanding performance, character and service.

Honorees included:

• Matthew Bentz and Emma Fisher from Kay Anderson’s class.
• Ben Sotelo and Sydney Tucker from Julie Brunson’s class.
• Jordan Ferguson and Zachary Stanton from Missy Harper’s class.
• Caleb Smith and Lana Stringer from Pam Manders’ class.
• Harrison Biggs and Mercedes Cooks from Kim Riley’s class.

Rockwell also acknowledged during the ceremony some 41 members of the Honor Society, 40 members of the choir, 28 students for making A Honor Roll and 54 students for making A-B Honor Roll.
