ROBERTSDALE – Robertsdale’s standout senior catcher Owen Williams signed to continue his baseball career at Huntingdon College in Montgomery on Friday.
Williams will join a Huntingdon program that has been very successful in baseball.
“They have won their conference title the last five years in a row,” Williams said. “I’m excited about getting up there.”
Although he loves playing baseball, Williams said knowing he will be able to get a quality education is the biggest reason he chose the Division 3 school.
“They were the first school to come after me because of my academics,” Williams said. “Academics comes first, and I will be able to get a great education there. Baseball always comes second to school.”
Owen’s father, Don Williams, said Friday was a big moment for the Williams family. Don, Owen’s mother Valerie Williams, his sister Amber and his niece MacKenzie were present for the signing.
“This means a whole lot to me because of the emphasis Huntingdon places on academics,” Don Williams said. “Baseball is a plus, but he will be getting a quality education there.”
Owen Williams said he has always played catcher.
“The first day of practice no one else wanted to do it, so the coach asked me to,” he said.
“I like being in on every play. The catcher is the only player, other than the pitcher, that gets to play on every single play.”
