DAPHNE, Alabama — The Robertsdale Lady Golden Bears continued to extend their opening streak of volleyball wins Thursday going 2-0 in a tri-match at Daphne with Baker.

Robertsdale defeated the Lady Hornets 25-21, 25-9 and then the match-hosting Lady Trojans 25-16, 25-19 to take a 9-0 record back to the Hub City. Daphne also lost to the Hornets 25-19, 25-17 to fall to 2-4 so far this season.

Robertsdale head coach Metta Roberts was pleased over all with the 9-0 mark and with her players’ overall physical effort on the court. But not as happy with some concentration lapses.

“They have done a good job this summer of coming in and working hard for me,” she said. “So right now, when it’s still early going—obviously— there are always things that you can be picky about. But mostly things that can be worked on and made better like getting better at picking up some of those balls that we’re letting hit the floor right now. Sometimes we get complacent and that concerns me, but it always does. “

RHS led Daphne 24-12 (game and match point) in game two, but the Lady Trojans went on a six-point run behind the serving of Taylor Wright before RHS got the final point.

“But that’s what happens,” Roberts said. “You lose focus and a team like Daphne will always keep coming back. So learning to stay focused is one area we need to pay attention to better. And that will come with just getting in the gym and touching the ball more.”

Daphne coach Edoli Herrion said she is still looking for more communication and trust to help lift her team which has some experienced individual players but who do not have a lot of varsity court-time experience together.

“We’re getting the intensity at the end of the game and when we’re down,” she said. “You can’t wait until it’s 23 to 10 to get going. You have to play from the beginning. Start out with more intensity and build from it. Instead we get behind, then we start to play. But you can't count on that. it's going to be too little too late most of the time. And it’s something I’m going to have to find a way to fix and get them to trust each other. It’s not about me trusting them, it’s about them trusting each other and I have to find a way to get them there. So we're working on it.

“When they want to win they win. When they're heads are not here then we don’t play.”

On leader totals from both matches, RHS outside hitter Bethany Coley scored 17 kills and nine digs for the day; Austin Richardson added 12 kills with 17 digs; setter Brooke McGhee had 25 assists and middle blockers Victoria Creamer and Maddie Petite picked a number of key points at the net for the Lady Bears.

Daphne was led by Katherine Barr with 14 kills and nine digs; Suzanne Evans with seven kills, three assists and Audrey Walding with 11 assists.
