DAPHNE, Alabama - The Lady Golden Bears of Robertsdale High are the 2012 Baldwin County champions after going undefeated in the Battle of Baldwin tournament Saturday.

RHS defeated Spanish Fort 25-22, 25-12, 25-22 in the best-of-five championship round at Daphne High’s Trojan Gym. Both the Lady Toros and Lady Bears are state ranked in the top-10 in their respective divisions by the Alabama Sports Writers Association.

The first tournament of it’s kind for volleyball in recent memory was held at DHS with Baldwin County, DHS, Fairhope, Foley, Gulf Shores and RHS competing in a two-day, round-robin format with RHS and Spanish Fort emerging as the finalists.

“This is the first county championship that I have been involved in,” said RHS head coach Metta Roberts, who played high school volleyball at Foley. “I had a great time. Looking forward to next year. In game one Spanish Fort jumped out to a lead but R-dale was able to come back and win the game 25-22. Game three was a good one as well. We held a lead but made some mistakes later in the third game for Spanish Fort to close the gap. I think that the kids are playing well but we have to get better at finishing matches.”

In other games which were played in a best-of-three tournament style format, RHS defeated Daphne - 22-25, 25-11, 15-6; def. Fairhope - 25-11, 25-9; def. Baldwin County High - 25-11, 25-12 and def. Gulf Shores - 25-13, 25-22. Spanish Fort defeated Daphne in three 25-21, 22-25, 15-10. Gulf Shores defeated Daphne 25-23, 25-16.

The site for the 2013 Battle of Baldwin tournament has not been determined.
