DAPHNE,Alabama—The Roberstdale Golden Bears swept Daphne in three-straight volleyball games on a Thursday visit to Trojan Gym to win the best-of-five 6A Area 3 match 25-13, 25-11, 25-16.
RHS improved to 6-0 in area play to remain out front of the five-team league which includes Daphne, Fairhope, Foley and Baldwin County. The Golden Bears are ranked No. 10 statewide in Class 6A and improved to 30-6 overall.
Bethany Coley led the Lady Bears offense with 18 kills and one block, Austin Richardson 10 kills and 15 digs, Beth Taylor had three kills and six digs, Maddie Petite added three blocks while Victoria Creamer and Coley each added a block and Brooke McGhee set for 32 assists in the win.
Katherine Barr had five kills and 12 digs, Taylor Wright had two blocks, three kills, Audrey Walding had nine digs with nine assists and Taylor Barnette three digs and five assists while Jordan Filotei picked up nine digs for the Lady Trojans. Daphne has three area games left.
"I thought we played well tonight," RHS coach Metta Roberts said. "Passed the ball well, handled the serve and receive and were able to get some good sets to our outside hitters Bethany and Austin. We still need to find a way to get our middles more involved because that keeps us from being one dimensional out there. We can be a lot harder to stop if we can move the ball from side to side and mix it with good middle offense. Defensively Maddie and Victoria are getting good blocks on the middle but we need them to score more, too."
Daphne coach Edoli Herrion was disappointed in the sweep, but sees some progress.
"We started picking up more balls defensively through the match. Some shots that we have been working on just didn't fall our way tonight. That kind of broke our momentum. We played hard and then still lost (points) on some small ball falling in on us. But that's part of the game too. We have got to keep touching balls and getting them back over. So we are going to keep fighting. I'm not worried. I have confidence in my team."
Daphne (8-21, 2-3) is hosting the Battle of Baldwin County round-robin tournament Friday and Saturday beginning at 3 p.m. Friday. RHS plays at home in the Golden Bears den Tuesday and Wednesday.
