ROBERTSDALE, Ala. — Jerry Eugene Bates, a Robertsdale resident, was arrested Sunday after Robertsdale police accused him of placing hidden video cameras in a teenaged girl’s room and another teen’s room. Bates is said to be a relative of both victims.
He was listed as being in jail Tuesday morning according to a Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office Web site. According to Robertsdale police spokesman Sgt. Rex Bishop the victims are related to Bates and the 17-year-old and another victim, 16-years-old, lived in Bates’ home.
Bishop declined to give the 16-year-old’s gender, citing the victim’s privacy as the reason.
Bates is being held on $250,000 bail, according to Bishop. If he is released from jail pending trial, he will not be permitted contact with minors and will have to wear a monitoring device.
The 43-year-old Silverhill Avenue resident was arrested Sunday morning on charges of producing obscene matter containing a visual depiction of a person under 17 years of age.
According to published reports, a family member found a hidden camera behind the mirror of the 17-year-old’s bedroom. A further search found more hidden cameras in the home, including the bedroom and the bathroom, which were operated with a wireless remote control.
At this time, police say they believe Bates was producing the videotape for his own use. Police seized a camera, a computer and several videotapes. They are checking to see if there are any other victims. If convicted of a Class A felony, Bates faces a prison sentence of up to 99 years.
