Robertsdale Honeybee Festival set for Saturday

ROBERTSDALE, Ala. — Grab your honey pot and “buzz” on down to the 21st Annual Honeybee Festival on Saturday, Oct. 2 in Robertsdale at Honeybee Park.

Beginning bright and early at 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. with 30 arts and crafts vendors plus food and entertainment for the whole family, Robertsdale Volunteer Fire Department Captain Lisa Lucas, event coordinator for the festival, said there is sure to be something for everyone.

“This is our 10th year of doing the festival and is our only fundraiser of the year. We really enjoy getting out and meeting people in the community on a non-emergency basis and for them to be able to get to know us too,” Lucas said.

There will be a firetruck parade at 9:30 a.m. starting in the RHS parking lot and ending up in the park, Lucas said, featuring trucks from departments all over the county. Also participating will be a pink truck to promote breast cancer awareness month.

Local band 4 a.m. will be providing musical entertainment throughout the day and at 1 p.m., an auction will take place underneath the tent with a variety of different items to bid on.

“We usually have some really good stuff and anyone can donate to the auction that wants to,” Lucas said.

Games, inflatables and pony rides for the kids will also be available, Lucas said, as well as the RVFD selling German sausage and drinks. “There will be three food vendors selling hot dogs and hamburgers so everyone will have plenty to eat,” Lucas said.

An outdoor movie, “Marmaduke” will begin at 7 p.m., Lucas said, and encourages everyone to bring their blankets and lawn chairs. “We showed a movie last year and people seemed to enjoy it so we are doing it again this year. It’s fun for families to be able to watch a movie together.”

All the proceeds from the festival go toward buying new equipment for the fire department, Lucas said.

“We have about 22 firemen and one set of turnout gear (jacket and pants) costs $1,500 and that doesn’t include the helmet or boots. So when you think about having to buy 22 sets of those, it gets pretty expensive. That’s why we depend on this festival so much,” Lucas said.

Hoping for another successful year, Lucas said they had a really great crowd last year and is looking forward to another great turnout this year. “If the weather cooperates,we should have a good day and we hope everyone will come out and support us this year.”
