DAPHNE, Ala. — The Robertsdale Lady Bears needed one out to secure the Mardi Gras Classic softball title Monday at Trione Park in Daphne. But the Bobcats of Theodore came through with back-to-back-to-back pinch hits in the bottom of the seventh to turn silver into gold.
“We had plenty of opportunities,” said RHS coach Paul Jones. “We left about eight runners on the bases. We just didn't get that hit.”
The Bears built an early 3-0 lead and expanded it later to go ahead 5-2 going into the last inning.
Robertsdale got to the final defeating Daphne 2-0 and Satsuma 7-3, but took a pool-play loss to Theodore 3-0. THS shutout Satsuma 6-0 and edged the hosting Lady Trojans 5-4 in the early rounds.
Meaghan Durant and Bailey Cincotta drove in the first two RHS runs in the title game's first inning. Chrissy Darby and Austin Richardson put a pair of singles together in the second for the 3-0 lead. THS scored two in the bottom half of the fifth to make it 3-2. But Kayli Evans reached on a single and made it 4-2 off an error. In the seventh Evans singled in Durant to make it 5-2. Durant had three hits in the game.
In the bottom of the seventh, Richardson made a heads-up play at second to flip the ball to Cincotta at first and then caught a routine pop-up for out two.
But THS then sent three players fresh off the bench up to the plate. Emily Evans tied it 5-5 with a 2-RBI single and Melissa Weir drove in the winning run on a double.
Jones said that with only two seniors, his younger players are learning to step up themselves.
“I'm proud of the effort my players are giving right now.”
Carmen Vivar started on the mound for RHS and went 4-1/3 innings. She also hit a shot over the left-field fence near the foul pole that was ruled foul.
In the JV Division, Baldwin County High's Lady Tigers made it to the championship game but fell to Satsuma 3-2 to take the JV runner-up trophy.
Daphne is hosting its annual Jubilee Shootout this weekend beginning Friday and finishing Saturday at Trione Park.
