ROBERTSDALE, Ala. – With appearances in postseason play for the past three seasons, the Robertsdale High School Lady Bears were not expected to fall in all three games over the weekend. The Lady Bears played host to the Second Annual Golden Bear Classic Dec. 17-19, falling to the Faith Academy Rams, the LeFlore Rattlers and the McGill-Toolen Yellow Jackets.
Thursday’s opening match up against the Lady Rams (8-3 overall) proved to be the Lady Bears’ biggest struggle of the Classic. The Lady Bears (1-7 overall) lost 66-20 with their leading scorer, senior Sheila Daily, shooting for just seven points.
With a tough loss against the Lady Rams, the Lady Bears went on to face the Lady Rattlers (13-0 overall) on Friday. The Lady Bears could not seem to find their rhythm throughout the night dropping just 24 points to the Rattlers’ 63. The Lady Bears turned the ball over 31 times leading to a loss.
“It is a rebuilding process. Our team is very young,” Robertsdale coach Scott Harville said. “I can already see improvement in our team as a whole since the first few games.”
The girl’s basketball finale was played on Saturday between the Lady Bears and the Lady Yellow Jackets (6-5 overall). The Lady Bears wrapped up the Classic with a loss of 63-52.
“I think we played well in all the games even though we lost,” Robertsdale freshman Austin Richardson said. “We never quit. We just kept playing our game. In the end, I feel we will have a successful season.”
The Lady Bears face the Hillcrest Jaguars (2-11 overall) Tuesday at 6:00 p.m. in Robertsdale.
