ROBERTSDALE, Alabama — Robertsdale Elementary School is inviting runners of all ages to put a little color into their weekend next month at the school Running Club’s annual Color Run.

The Robertsdale City Council approved the course and a $500 sponsorship at its meeting Tuesday morning. This is the third annual run, which will be held Saturday, Feb. 13 beginning at Robertsdale Elementary School.

The race begins and ends at Robertsdale Elementary School with proceeds from the event going to benefit the RES Running Club to help build a track at the school for practices.

The running club was formed in 2013 with the goal of participating in one competition per month. The club is open to students in third through sixth grades and includes more than 40 runners.

The group meets every Thursday and competes in 5K races throughout the area.

Pre-registration, postmarked by Jan. 29, will cost $15 for adults and $10 for students. Late registration after Feb. 1 will cost $20 for adults and $15 for students.

Registration forms can be mailed to the Robertsdale Running Club, 1 Cub Drive, Robertsdale, AL 36567. Race day registration for this year’s race begins at 7 a.m. at the school, with a “color bomb explosion” of dyed corn starch will be let loose on the runners at 7:45 a.m. The 5K race is set to begin at 8 a.m. with the 1-mile fun run immediately following.

Registration forms can be picked up at the school before the day of the race. Packet pickup will be held from 3:30 to 6 p.m. the day before the race.

Door prizes will be given away following the race.

This year’s event will be combined with the school’s annual Wild Game Day, which will be held immediately following the race and feature food, games and a silent auction.

In other business Monday, the council approved a resolution for a 2016 Alabama Department of Transportation’s Transportation Alternatives Program (T.A.P.) grant for sidewalk construction.

City Engineer Greg Smith said the city applied for, but did not received the grant a year ago. The $500,000 project would include sidewalk construction on Krchak Lane from Highway 59 to Palmer Street, then north on Palmer Street to Mimosa and will include the area around the PZK Civic Center and Park.

Under the terms of the grant, if approved, ALDOT will provide 80 percent of the funds for the project, up to $400,000. If the project should go over the projected $500,000 cost, Smith said, it would be the city’s responsibility to pay the difference.

In other business Monday, the council:

  • Approved a request from George P. Thames Senior Center Director Sarah Duncan and one other person to attend a Vehicle Training Workshop. The workshop is free, Duncan said, with the city agreeing to pay hotel and dining expenses for two days.
  • Approved the purchase of an F-150 pickup for the Robertsdale Volunteer Fire Department at an estimated cost of $30,255.
  • Approved the purchase of a Ford Interceptor SUV for the Robertsdale Police Department at an estimated cost of $30,906. Both items were included in the 2015-16 fiscal year budget, said Police Chief Brad Kendrick.
  • Approved the purchase of a tractor from Baldwin Equipment for the city’s Public Works Department at a cost of $10,300.
  • Voted to reject bids and allow Public Works Director Scott Gilbert to negotiate the sale of the city’s bucket truck provided that the truck not be sold for less than $7,777.
