BAY MINETTE, Ala. - The Robertsdale Golden Bears raced to an early 27-6 lead and then withstood a late Baldwin County charge to register a 34-28 win Friday night in Bay Minette.
Coach Brian Campbell's Bears improved to 3-6 on the season with the victory while the Tigers remained winless at 0-9.
Denzel Smith led RHS with a trio of touchdown runs while rushing 25 times for 112 yards. Smith scored on runs of one, one, and five yards while the Bears also tallied on a 2-yard touchdown run from Tavaris Curry and a 3-yard Dylan Smith to Devin Carlee touchdown pass. Carter Gautney connected of 4-of-5 extra points for Robertsdale.
Baldwin County got their points on a pair of Andre Davis to Jaquan Finch scoring passes (20 and 15 yards), a 1-yard run from Robert Stevens and a 28-yard run from Davis. The Tigers added two two-point conversions.
Davis led the Tigers with 13-of-19 passing for 169 yards.
Robertsdale scored first after covering the opening kickoff at the BCHS 38 yard line. Smith capped the drive with a1-yard dive with 9:52 left in the first period.
BCHS came right back and cut it to 7-6 on Davis' 28-yard scamper with 6:10 left in the first half. That score was set up by Chris Faulkner's blocked punt and recovery at the Bear 28. The try for two failed.
Robertsdale went up 21-6 on another 1-yard Smith run and Dylan Smith's short TD pass to Carlee. Gautney converted after all three of the early Bear scores.
Curry made it 27-6 with his 2-yard score with 6:45 left in the opening half.
After Gautney's PAT attempt was wide, BCHS drove down and cut the lead to 27-12 on a 20 yard Davis to Finch scoring aerial. Davis then connected with Finch again for the two point conversion.
Gautney missed a 24-yard field goal as the first half horn sounded.
A 15-yard Davis to Finch TD pass cut the lead to 27-20 with 7:41 remaining in the third and Stevens then added two points on a run off tackle.
But the Bears came right back and rebuilt the double digit lead on a 5-yard scoring run by Smith with 3:33 left in the third. Gautney's kick upped the lead to 34-22.
Bay Minette closed out the scoring on Steven's 1-yard run with 3:27 left in the game but the pass for two was intercepted.
Robertsdale then picked up three first downs to run out the clock.
RHS closes out their season next Friday, battling with Faith Academy in Robertsdale while Baldwin County travels to Atmore to play old rival Escambia County.
