Single-lane closures will occur during nighttime work hours through Sunday, Aug. 6, as the Alabama Department of Transportation focuses on its Highway 59 widening project.
ALDOT will be milling, paving and striping along Highway 59, south of County Road 6 through the Fort Morgan Road intersection, beginning at 7 p.m. and will resume Sunday, Aug. 2. They will continue to work Sunday through next Thursday, Aug. 6, weather permitting.
Work will be between 7 p.m. and 4 a.m.
BRIDGE REMINDER
The newly striped third lane on the Holmes Bridge in Gulf Shores will remain closed until construction of the new pedestrian bridge is completed.
Work to complete the new lane on the bridge was finished overnight Tuesday into Wednesday morning by the general contractor as part of ALDOT’s Hwy. 59 widening project.
The lane’s closure “ensures pedestrians and bicyclists continue to have a safe way to cross the Intracoastal Waterway,” according to the city.
According to the city’s late July update on the pedestrian bridge project, onsite assembly of the main bridge structure remains on track to kick off in early August. Once completed, crews are tentatively targeting mid-September to lift and set the bridge onto its substructure.
Progress on both elevator towers continues, and the south side of East 2nd Street remains open to normal everyday traffic operations. For drivers heading north of the ICW, access remains restricted to local traffic only during the superstructure construction phase.
