Rivals, communities on same team for injured coach

SPANISH FORT, Alabama--Even the noise of a high-powered, nationally televised football game can be reduced to silence when the reality of a serious injury to a special person is brought to attention.

Before and after the Daphne - Spanish Fort game Monday, a capacity crowd went from raucous to reserved, from clamor to calm when asked to think of and pray for Daphne assistant coach Jacy Todd -- now in an Atlanta rehabilitation hospital and possibly facing a future without walking again.

Both teams had a moment of silence together after the game for coach Todd as well.

"Everything coach Todd stands for — we miss," Daphne head coach Glenn Vickery said. "Just a great person, father, teacher and a great coach. And he's going to be mad at us for not getting this win for him. But we will do better for him."

Daphne led most of the game while Todd watched with his family on ESPN. But the Toros of SFHS -- which broke off as a start up from DHS in 2005 -- came back late in the game for a 20-14 win.

Todd was severely injured in a traffic crash in the Malbis area Aug. 1 on his way to Jubilee Stadium at DHS to cut the grass before practice. He is in Atlanta after a month of extreme pain and discomfort while recovering at USA Medical Center in Mobile. His

wife Deaytra and their four-year-old daughter, Raegan, are with him.

Spanish Fort head coach Mark Freeman also said Todd was on everyone's mind and heart. "Not a day goes by that we don't pray for coach Todd. I believe God has a plan for that deal and we are believers and with the prayers of these communities we will see a miracle come out of this."

The spectators from both sides contributed a total of $658 to the Todd's family recovery fund and, "Team Todd," a support group for the Trojan coach and history teacher founded by Denise Morgan was taking orders for T-Shirts which will also benefit the Todd family.

Deaytra Todd stated on her CaringBridge.org blog that her husband's first full-day of therapy went well — and after watching the game Monday — was even more determined to get back to work. "Jacy is more motivated than ever to get back to football. He analyzed every second of the game last night and was disappointed that he couldn't be there."

She also asked for continued prayers noting they were still a long way from crossing their own goal line to victory.

"Please continue to pray for us as each day brings something new," she wrote. "We are keeping the faith and praying for a miracle as always. We still have a long road ahead of us."

After spinal surgery Aug. 15 at USA, Todd began making a stunning

recovery and was given the medical release for rehab that he and his

family had prayed. Since then he has no longer needed assisted breathing.

Morgan and her Daphne-football-playing sons Nic and Zack came up with the Team Todd concept to help find ways to help relieve some of the Todd's immediate financial needs. The first idea is a

t-shirt sales drive set up less than a week after the wreck.

“We were devastated when we heard of Coach Todd's accident,” she said.

“He has played such an important role in the lives of many children. His influence reached beyond the football field into the halls of

Daphne High School. He has been a teacher, a coach, a mentor, and a friend to many. He is truly one of a kind. When something like this happens to someone who is special to you, you often find yourself

wanting to help, but not knowing what you can do. On the way home from visiting the Todd family at the hospital, my boys — who both played football for Jacy — and I found ourselves in that very position. We started throwing out ideas of what we could do. My son, Nic, thought we should call ourselves Team Todd. The support from the community has been phenomenal, and has left many of us in

awe.”

In a post by Deaytra Todd Wednesday night, she said her husband had a few words for his players.

“Jacy worked extra hard in the gym today. You all would be proud of him. His physical therapist is a lady and her coaching philosophy is a lot like his. She's tough. She reminds him constantly that she will call you guys up here to coach him if he doesn't do what she says.

“He wanted to talk to you all before the game on Monday but he still doesn't have his voice back. Please know that his heart is there with you every step of the way. He is proud that you are his boys and told everyone how great each of you are. His goal is to be back before the season is over. We look forward to seeing all of you soon.”

The shirts have TEAM TODD on the front left hand side. On the back is printed, "Daphne Trojans are believing in a miracle. " Under that is from the New Testament, Romans 12:12, a verse that Deaytra Todd has “really leaned on since the accident,” Morgan said adding, “I feel

like the overwhelming amount of support and prayers from so many, not just in Daphne, but all over the state, speaks volumes about just how special the Todd family is to so many.”

The Standard English Bible translation of the verse reads, "Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, constant in prayer."
