Richardson Bricken McKenzie Jr., 85, passed away at his home in Montgomery on Sept. 8, 2013.

Dick was born in Selma on May 30, 1928 to Ruby Porter McKenzie and Richardson Bricken McKenzie.

Following graduation from Parrish High School in 1946, Dick attended the University of Alabama, where he was a member of the Kappa Alpha fraternity, ODK, Jasons and Alpha Kappa Psi.

He played basketball for the University of Alabama and was co-captain of the team from 1949-1950

After graduation, Dick worked in his family wholesale grocery business, Stewart, King & McKenzie in Selma.

An active community member, Dick was on the boards of directors of the local Salvation Army, American Cancer Society, First Alabama Bank and the Selma Medical Center.

He was chairman of the Selma City School Board, the United Way and of the Executive Board of the Paul Grist YMCA.

Dick also served on the board of NAWGA, and was president of the Alabama Wholesale Grocer’s Association.

He was active as an elder in the Presbyterian Church in both Selma and Fairhope, where he lived for almost 20 years.

Dick was preceded in death by his wife, Mary George; his parents, Ruby Porter McKenzie and Richardson Bricken McKenzie; and his brother, William Stewart McKenzie.

Dick is survived by his wife of 31 years, Rosemary Melton McKenzie; his sister, Jean McKenzie Oast (Ed); his four children, Richardson B. McKenzie III (Dabney), Melissa McKenzie (Terri), Rena McKenzie Kimball (Eric) and John David McKenzie (Angela); and his stepsons, Dean Evans Bouchillon, Joel Melton Bouchillon (Stacey) and Neil Reeves Bouchillon. He is also survived by 13 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

The family requests that any memorial donations be made to Hospice of Montgomery or the First United Methodist Church of Montgomery.

A family graveside service will take place in Selma later in the fall.
