Doris Penry Rhymer died Sunday, June 3, 2007 at her home.

She was born Nov. 8, 1927 to Bessie Estelle Robinson and Walter Evan Penry of Belforest and graduated from Fairhope High School in 1946. She graduated from Troy University in 1954 with a BS degree and in 1963 with an MS degree.

She taught public schools in Summerdale, Andalusia and Fairhope. She taught in Department of Defense Schools at Tyndal Air Force Base and Quantico Marine Corps Base, spending the last 17 years of her career in administration at Quantico.

She retired in 1987 and returned to Fairhope, where she enjoyed traveling, cooking, gardening, and visiting shut-ins. She volunteered for the Eastern Shore Chamber of Commerce, and Thomas Hospital.

She served as past board member of Fairhope First and Volunteer Action and was past president of NARFE chapter 814. She was also past president of the Alabama Federation of NARFE Chapters, and past secretary for the Thomas Hospital Auxiliary.

She was a member of Fairhope Christian Church, serving as deacon, elder and trustee, choir member and CWF participant.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy H. Rhymer.

Survivors include a daughter, Susan (Tom) Plantier of Mercerville, N.J.; one grandson, Christopher; sister, Estelle Johnson of Arvada, Colo., and brothers, Durward Penry of Springfield, Mo, Walter (Jane) Penry and Bill (Janet) Penry of Daphne.

Visitation will be held at 10 a.m. followed by a memorial service at 11 a.m. Friday, June 8 at Fairhope Christian Church.

The family requests memorial donations be made to the American Cancer Society or The Haven in Fairhope.
