ROBERTSDALE – Robertsdale High School's boys and girls basketball teams clinched area titles with wins over Fairhope on Tuesday night.
The Lady Golden Bears (12-11, 4-0) clinched 6A Area 3's regular season title with a 54-41 win over The Lady Pirates. The win ensured that Robertsdale would host the Area 3 tournament in February and also secured a playoff berth for the Lady Golden Bears.
"It was important for us to get the win," Robertsdale girls head coach Scott Harville said. "It seals up the area for us, and now we host the tournament. It also automatically qualifies us for the playoffs."
Harville's team jumped on Fairhope early and never let up. The Lady Bears led 15-8 at the end of the first period and extended the lead to 26-17 by the half. Both Sheila Dailey and Kiaria McMillian reached double figures before the break, scoring 11 and 10 respectively.
Robertsdale broke the game open in third, taking a 43-28 lead into the final period. Shelby Trotter had eight points in the third, while Dailey added four more points to her total.
Fairhope made a run in the fourth after Trotter fouled out and Kiaria McMillian left the game temporarily with an injury. Fairhope opened the period on an 8-3 scoring run.
"My top point guard (Trotter) fouled out, then my next point guard (McMillian) went out inured," Harville said. "It really had no bearing, though. We just needed to be a little bit smarter about what we were doing."
Dailey finished with 19 points to lead all scorers. Kiaria McMillian added 14 points, and Trotter finished with eight. Ciaria McMillian scored seven in the win.
Megan Dowdy led Fairhope with 15 points, and Raven Priolo added 10 in the loss.
Robertsdale's boys sealed up the 6A Area 3 regular season title with a 57-35 win over Fairhope.
The Golden Bears will host the Area 3 tournament in February and are guaranteed a spot in the playoffs.
Robertsdale played smothering defense, giving up just 10 first half points to the Pirates. The Golden Bears led 25-10 at the break.
"We just did not play well," Fairhope head coach Andy Ryan said. "Robertsdale played very well, but this was not our best effort.
"We didn't attack their defense well at all. I was very disappointed in the way we played. Robertsdale deserved to win this game."
Kent Langham had 12 points at halftime, including three pointers to close out the first and second periods. Langham finished with a game-high 19 points to lead Robertsdale. Brandon Ellis added 12 points, while Quenton Evans and Cordero Dade had eight points each.
Harvey Mitchell led Fairhope with 14 points in the loss.
