ROBERTSDALE — It was a rainsoaked Homecoming, but it did not dampen the spirits of the Robertsdale Golden Bears at J.D. Sellars Stadium Friday night. Winning doesn't hurt either as the Bears improved to 3-2 on the season with a 10-6 victory over the Baker Hornets.

After giving up the a score on Baker's opening drive, Robertsdale came roaring back, scoring 10 unanswered points and taking the lead with 3:40 left in the third quarter.

After the Bears failed to gain a first down on the opening drive of the game, a short punt set Baker up in good field position where they drove 55 yards in eight plays, but a blocked extra point attempt left the score at 6-0 with 6:02 to play in the first period.

Colby Norman booted a 27-yard fieldgoal to cut the lead in half at 6-3 with 2:12 remaining in the opening period before Robertsdale scored in the second half to take the lead.

Robertsdale's go-ahead score was set up on the Bears' previous drive after Sammy Tolbert returned a Baker punt all the way into Hornet territory at the 28. A holding penalty pushed the ball back to the 38.

After converting a fourth-and-four with a nine-yard Tolber run, the Bears went backward 12 yards with a penalty, two short run plays and a sack, forcing Robertsdale to punt from the Baker 35.

Jarrod Mack was able to pin Baker back at their own 10-yard line and two plays later Demetrius McKinney fell on a Hornet fumble at the 20.

Quarterback Celeb Sumrall took the ball himself on a 12-yard run to set up first-and-goal at the 8, then gained three more yards before Tolbert punched the ball in from five yards out to give Robertsdale the lead. Norman added the extra point to put the Bears up 10-6 with 3:40 to play in the third quarter.

From there Robertsdale was able to make three big defensive stops to seal the victory.

Baker took the ensuing kickoff and drove 58 yards in 12 plays, but the Robertsdale defense stepped up from the Bear 31 as Brandon Hinote stuffed the run, then Baker threw incomplete on second down, setting up a third-and-seven from the 28. From there Dylan Hutto was able to stop the Hornets three yards short of a first down and Baker's pass on fourth down was caught out of bounds, giving Robertsdale the ball back at the Hornet 24.

Robertsdale gained two first downs before fumbling on its next drive, giving the Hornets the ball at the Baker 25-yard line, but after gaining one first down, the Hornets would be stung by penalties and a fumbled snap on third down pushed the ball all the way from the Baker 37 back to the 16-yard line.

Robertsdale would have to make one final defensive stand after failing to gain a first down from their own 49, punting back to the Hornets from midfield.

After gaining a first down, Baker would fumble again for a nine-yard loss, then punted after an incomplete pass and a short gain on third down left the Hornets with a fourth-and-8 from the Baker 30.

Young quarterback Hunter Vaughn, who entered the game early in the fourth quarter after Sumrall went down with an ankle injury, would step up big for the Bears on their final drive gaining 21 yards on the first play, taking the ball into Hornet territory at the 47. Vaughn would then pick up a key first down, converting a third-and-three with a 14-yard run all the way to the Bakedr 26.

With just over a minute showing on the clock, Vaughn would run the next three plays in the victory formation, running out the clock to give the Bears a 10-6 victory.

"Baker is a tough football team and our kids were able to step up defensively when it counted and come away with a win," said RHS Head Coach Scott Phelps. "Hunter plays defense and offense for us and we knew coming in that he had the ability to step up when needed and he was able to come in and make some big plays that helped us win the ballgame."

Tobert led the Bear offense rushing for 90 yards on 24 carries. Vaughn had 68 yards on seven carries before taking a knee on the game's final three plays for minus-13 yards. Sumrall completed 3 of 6 passes for 52 yards, while Vaughn completed 1 of 4 passes for 26 yards in the contest.
