LOXLEY, Ala. — The Baldwin County Board of Education voted at a special meeting held Tuesday at the Central Office in Loxley, to adopt a resolution for redistricting of School Board voting districts in Baldwin County.
At its Aug. 2 meeting in Loxley, the Board voted unanimously to reconfigure the voting districts and held a series of meetings Aug. 9 and 11 at locations throughout Baldwin County to receive public input on the proposal.
The Board voted unanimously on Tuesday to approve the resolution pending approval of the Attorney General of the United States.
Board President Angie Swiger and members Frank Trione, Elmer McDaniel, Norm Moore, Tracy Roberts and Robert F. Callahan Jr. voted for the measure. Board member Robert A. Wills was not present at Tuesday’s meeting.
According to the Voting Rights Act of 1965, every 10 years after each census, school systems are required to review and, if necessary, redraw voting boundaries to reflect current population trends.
Under the plan, districts will adhere closely to the feeder patterns for Baldwin County’s seven high schools, Baldwin County High, Bay Minette; Daphne, Fairhope, Foley, Gulf Shores, Robertsdale and Spanish Fort, with the exception of areas in Fairhope, Spanish Fort, Daphne and a small portion of Loxley, which would follow municipal boundaries.
One Board member who is a resident of the district, will be elected for each district represented.
Board members elected from districts existing prior to the change will represent the same districts and will serve out the term of office for their district.
Board member terms are staggered with District 1, now held by Frank Trione; and District 2, held by Robert Wills, scheduled to be up for election in 2012. District 3, held by Elmer McDaniel, District 5, held by Angie Swiger; and District 6, held by Robert Callahan will be on the ballot in 2014. District 4, held by Norm Moore; and District 7, held by Tracy Roberts, terms will be up in 2016.
In other business Tuesday, the Board took action on several personnel matters including:
• Approved the appointment of administrative positions.
• Approved leaves of absence eight certificated and classified personnel positions.
• Approved retirements and resignations for seven certificated and classified personnel positions.
• Approved the transfer for 16 certificated and classified personnel positions.
• Approved employment for 23 certificated and classified personnel positions.
• Approved extra work for extended periods for 38 certificated and classified personnel positions.
