Renaissance, Middle Ages lead to FES art

Posted

Mr. Wilhelm’s Foley Elementary art students have been studying the Middle Ages and Renaissance this year. The students have produced illuminated letters using watercolor pencils. Recently, they have been working on pictures that appear to be stained glass.

Some students are using oil pastels and others are using tempera paint to color their stained glass art. The halls are filling up with examples of student work.

The students in Ms Pegoda’s second through fourth grade speech classes have created stories to read to help them practice target speech sounds. The stories are printed from PowerPoint slides with clipart to illustrate them. Some of the characters in the stories include “Solarman,” “Sharkboy,” “Dr. Haven” — a veterinarian that is a seal, and Rikita who sings with Justin Bieber.

All the stories involve the characters solving a problem which sometimes is exciting and sometimes funny. All of them are fun to read!

Mrs. Watson’s first grade class has been busy learning air and weather by using their awesome AMSTI kit. The children have enjoyed dropping parachutes made from paper napkins off the playground equipment to show how air resistance slows it down. They have also leaned that even though air is invisible it still takes up space.

Third grade has been looking forward to the Thanksgiving holiday. Most of the classes have been engaged in activities in anticipation of this uniquely American holiday. The hallways have been decorated with synonym “Turkeys,” and in social studies they have been studying Native American communities.

In math, most of the third grade has just finished a unit in addition/subtraction and is beginning a unit on time; while in science they are in the midst of an AMSTI study of geology.

Mrs. Ard’s fourth grade class has been busy this month. As the class prepared for Thanksgiving, the students wrote essays about the things for which they are thankful. The students had a great time expressing themselves and presented their essays to their families on Thanksgiving Day. The class also enjoyed learning about force and momentum as they tested hypotheses using the Motion and Design AMSTI kit. We hope that everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving!

Mrs. Tucker’s fourth grade students create “Tri -A -Ramas” to illustrate, define, and describe their Science lessons each week. They also use their laptops to reinforce their skills in each subject as well as take AR tests each week.
