The American Red Cross is urging people to schedule blood donation appointments as it works to maintain a stable blood supply heading into the busy summer months.
The organization said donors of all blood types are needed to help ensure lifesaving blood products remain available for patients in hospitals. The call comes as the Red Cross reports an alarming decline in scheduled donations in recent weeks.
Summer activities often create challenges for blood collection efforts. As temperatures rise, many people are focused on travel, school breaks and end-of-school-year events, which can lead to postponed appointments and fewer opportunities to donate.
The start of Atlantic hurricane season on June 1 also presents concerns. Severe weather can quickly disrupt donation efforts in affected areas and may force blood drive delays or cancellations.
The Red Cross is encouraging eligible donors to take action now by scheduling an appointment. Donations can be scheduled at www.RedCrossBlood.org, by calling (800) 733-2767 or through the Red Cross Blood Donor App.
As an incentive, everyone who comes to donate between June 1 and June 28 will receive a $15 e-gift card to a merchant of their choice. Donors also will be automatically entered for a chance to win one of two $7,500 gift cards. Additional details are available at www.RedCrossBlood.org/June.
