Rain-delayed fundraiser to be held June 26 at American Legion

FAIRHOPE, Ala. — They say every cloud has a silver lining. The bad weather that occurred on Earth Day resulted in the rescheduling of the second annual Beach Benefit Concert, sponsored by the Fairhope Veterans Memorial Committee.

The event will be held June 26 at American Legion Post 199, 700 S. Mobile St. in Fairhope. The public is invited to come down to Mobile Bay, enjoy some good music and have a good time.

Proceeds from this event will help fund the “Tears of Sorrow, Tears of Joy” sculpture monument to honor all U.S. military veterans and their families, which will be placed on the bluff overlooking the Fairhope Municipal Pier when completed.

Residents are invited to grab some folding chairs, sunscreen and their kids and come to the American Legion Beach Stage beginning at 4 p.m. for fun, food and great music.

The Tiki Bar will be open and serving liquid refreshments until 9 p.m. Food and soft drinks prepared by Alleman’s By the Bay will also be available for purchase on site. A portion of the food proceeds will benefit the memorial.

Other games with prizes will unfold as the afternoon progresses.

A free Moonwalk will be set up for the kids. They can also play in the sand and dance to the music.

Children will also have an opportunity to watch one of Fairhope’s resident artists as he paints during the festivities.

Admission is $5, and young folks ages 15 and under get in free.

The musical stage will be emceed by Lori DuBose, station manager for WABF-1220 AM. Relax bayside and enjoy the sassy bluegrass music of Delta Reign from 5-9 p.m. This group is well-known in this area and enjoys a large, loyal fan base.

In addition to the concert, a silent auction, art show and bake sale, participants can view the a display of the veterans memorial.

Other military presentations are also planned. Members of the 1165th Military Police Co., based in Fairhope, will be present with a vehicle or two that young and old alike will enjoy perusing and perhaps posing for a photograph with some of these soldiers.

Remember, no coolers may be brought into the area. The activities will move to the Legion indoor stage if it rains.

For more information, contact Joe Birindelli, Fairhope Veterans Memorial Committee co-chairman, at (251) 928-3292.

Titled “Tears of Sorrow — Tears of Joy,” the memorial  was conceptualized by Fairhope resident Sarah “Sissy” Scott and brought to artistic fruition by internationally known sculptor Stephen C. Spears, also of Fairhope.

The design features two bronze sculptures. The sculpture facing west, that of a woman cradling a folded flag, honors the sacrifice all soldiers who have died in service to our country as well as the sacrifice made by their families. The sculpture that will face the bay features a kneeling soldier handing a U.S. flag to a young boy, which symbolizes the patriotic example our soldiers live and their challenge to future generations to preserve and protect our nation.

Both sculptures are presented in a figure-eight pool on elevated disks of different heights. Water flows from the higher “Tears of Joy” presentation to the “Tears of Sorrow” sculpture and into the pool.
