Race raised most money

DAPHNE, Ala. — The Seventh Annual Animal Rescue Dog Run on Dec. 15 posted its most successful numbers yet, a spokesman reported Thursday.

The race, held in Olde Towne Daphne, raised $7,400 for the Animal Rescue Foundation; most of the proceeds will go toward veterinary bills — which can sometimes be expensive, James Pennington, ARF volunteer, said.

“Many times rescued animals are badly injured,” he said. “Vet bills can cost upwards of $1,000.”

Around 300 runners participated in the event at Centennial Park, Pennington said. Winners included Patty Ericksen, Debbie Renfroe, Craig Warlick and Jon Adams, all of Daphne.

Many runners and their dogs participated in the 1-mile pet trot and several ran with their dogs in the 5K race. Others simply mingled with other pets and pet owners, Pennington said.

“The socialization is good for the animals,” he said.

The race is ARF’s primary fundraiser, but the non-profit organization needs help throughout the year. Monetary support and volunteers are always needed. Volunteer work includes helping with pet adoptions and caring for and cleaning after the animals, Pennington said.
