FAIRHOPE, Ala. — Twelve days before the Oct. 7 runoffs for mayor and Place 2 City Council seat, local voters can attend a forum to watch the candidates in action.
They can also track the kind of questions that will be asked of the candidates and submit their own suggested questions on the Web site of the organization sponsoring the forum.
At a meeting Wednesday of the Citizens for Responsible Government, the group discussed plans for the forum.
“The questions have been coming in fast and furious,” said Harvey Joanning, the group’s president, referring to the issues and questions that people had been recommending by e-mail.
The Sept. 25 forum at the Fairhope Civic Center will be broadcast live from 7-9 p.m. on WABF Radio 1220 AM, Joanning said.
“This Web site is available for your information and to give you an opportunity to provide input,” the CRG’s Web site states. “Please read the following summaries of issues and questions suggested by CRG and individuals who have submitted comments. Let us know what issues you would like addressed by voting for questions listed below or submitting your own question.”
All four candidates in the two runoff elections have confirmed their attendance and been invited to submit their own suggested five top issues facing the city, Joanning said. Their submissions will also be posted on the Web site, he said.
Incumbent Mayor Tim Kant faces Dean Mosher in the mayoral runoff, and incumbent City Councilman Dan Stankoski faces Danny Corte in that race.
By press time, Stankoski was the only candidate to have submitted what he believed to be the five main issues facing the city, which are posted on the group’s Web site at www.responsiblegov.net.
After Wednesday’s meeting, Joanning posted the categories of top issues with specific questions under each category that were developed during the meeting.
The top issues facing the city from which questions will be asked according to the frequency of submissions from the public, candidates and the group itself thus far are as follows:
• Finances
• Growth management
• Water issues such as stormwater management
• Public safety
• Openness in government
• Traffic
• Special projects
• Revenue and
• The role of mayor and City Council.
“The top two issues were finances and growth management,” Joanning said. “Growth management maybe came out on top.”
Suggested questions and other comments should be sent by e-mail to joanning@iastate.edu or by regular mail to Citizens for Responsible Government, 560 Morphy Ave., Fairhope, AL 36532.
