Public input event set for Gulf Shores Kids Park

The city of Gulf Shores is launching Reimagine Kids Park, a community–driven initiative to rebuild the beloved wooden playground at Johnnie Sims Park.

Originally constructed in 1996 through a community–wide effort with Leathers & Associates, the playground has reached the end of its usable life despite decades of care, inspection, and repairs, according to a news release from the city and previous reporting by GCM at council meetings.

"Guided by residents' strong connection to the charm and character of the original design, the city is embarking on a full redesign that honors the spirit of the park while creating a modern, safe and imaginative space for today's children," the city said. "Leathers & Associates will lead the design process beginning this spring, incorporating ideas from families, students and community members."

As part of this design phase, the city invites the public to attend "Come Play with Us!" a family–friendly engagement event scheduled for Saturday, April 25, from 9 to 11 a.m. at the existing Kids Park at Johnnie Sims Park.

The event will feature activities for children, including a drawing station where young participants can share their own "dream park" ideas. Adults will have opportunities to complete a survey and offer input on features and priorities for the new playground. Additional festivities will include music, face painting, games, snow cones and cotton candy.

"This is truly a community–driven project," said Grant Brown, director of Recreation & Cultural Affairs. "We want a park that reflects the creativity and needs of our families, and this event gives everyone an opportunity to share their ideas. The input we receive will play a major role in designing a space our children can enjoy for years to come."

Residents who are unable to attend in person can participate through an online town hall platform, where they can complete surveys, view design previews and submit questions or comments. The platform can be accessed at www.gulfshoresal.gov/kidspark.

Construction of the new Kids Park is expected to begin in September, with the grand opening planned for November. The project is part of the city's 2026 Capital Plan, which is its vision for creating vibrant, meaningful public spaces for all who call Gulf Shores home.
