Project Rebound to host event helping residents affected by oil spill

FOLEY, Ala. - Project Rebound, an organization striving to help residents affected by the British Petroleum Oil Spill from April 2010, will host a Health and Housing Fair Tuesday from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Foley Civic Center.

The Foley City Council authorized at the June 6 council meeting for the group to use the civic center at no charge to host the fair.

Paige Rucker, Project Rebound state director, said at the council meeting the different groups and vendors at the fair would educate residents on what resources and options are available in certain situations.

"Our Project Rebound team has seen an increase in calls related to foreclosures as well as the need for mortgage and rental assistance," Rucker said via email. "We found that residents in our community simply don’t know what their housing options are and we’re trying to help them take steps to recover financially.  They are also putting their health on the backburner and this is a great way to take advantage of free health screenings to get back on track."

The event is free to the public.

"They'll have mortgage counseling to credit counseling and they will have medical professionals," Foley Mayor John Koniar said. "It is a combination of information and services to people who might need it right now.

"Unfortunately, this is needed. It's still a wonderful effort to help the locals."

Another fair will take place June 30 from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Bay Minette Civic Center.

The organization helps those affected by the oil spill with emotional issues, financial struggles and personal problems.

"Project Rebound has done a lot of research and even gone door to door in some cases. They actually have counselors on the payroll," Koniar said.
