Sydney R. Prince, Jr., a Mobile native and longtime resident of Fairhope, died Thursday, April 5, 2007 of natural causes. He was 100.
Prince is preceded in death by his parents, Sydney R. Prince and the former Hattie Beverly Smith, both of Mobile; his wife, the former Elizabeth Herndon; and son, Robin H. Prince. He is survived by his son, Sydney R. Prince III, six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Prince graduated Woodberry Forest School in Virginia. He earned his undergraduate and law degrees at Yale University.
After receiving his law degree and marrying in 1932, Prince moved to suburban Maryland, where he lived until retiring in 1972. He then relocated to Point Clear, where he lived until his death.
During World War II, Prince served as a Naval Intelligence officer on Admiral Frank Jack Fletcher’s staff in the Pacific theater. After the war, he practiced railroad labor law in the Washington, D.C.-Baltimore area.
He was an avid golfer, recording three aces during his lifetime. He also enjoyed bridge and intellectual pursuits.
During his recent 100th birthday celebration, Prince attributed his longevity to, "A good night's sleep, a clear conscience and a big glass of wine every afternoon at 4:30."
Plans for a memorial service will be announced at a later date.
