Primary elections 2026: Qualifying for special congressional primary open May 20-22

Posted

Qualifying dates and election information have been announced for the upcoming special primary elections for Alabama’s congressional districts affected by a recent U.S. Supreme Court ruling that paved the way for the state's congressional map to be redrawn.

The ruling allowed Gov. Kay Ivey to initiate the redistricting, which reverted lines back to those made in 2023, nixing what had become Alabama's second Democratic-majority district, largely based in Mobile.

Qualifying for candidates opened Wednesday, May 20, at 8:30 a.m. and closes Friday, May 22, at 5 p.m.

Republican candidates may qualify online at www.algop.org or in person at ALGOP Headquarters, located at 3505 Lorna Road, Hoover, AL 35216.

For additional information about the qualifying process, visit www.algop.org or call ALGOP Headquarters at (205) 212-5900.

Democratic candidates may qualify online at https://aldemocrats.org/august-11th-special-primary-election-qualifying or in person at party headquarters, located at 501 Adams Ave., Montgomery, AL 36104.

For more information about candidate qualifying, interested parties should call the Alabama Democratic Party Headquarters, (334) 262-2221, or email qualifying@aldemocrats.org.

The following congressional offices will be included in the special primary election:

  • U.S. House of Representatives — Congressional District 1 (Baldwin County)
  • U.S. House of Representatives — Congressional District 2
  • U.S. House of Representatives — Congressional District 6
  • U.S. House of Representatives — Congressional District 7

The special primary election will be held Tuesday, Aug. 11.

Pursuant to legislation passed by the Alabama Legislature during the recent special session, there will be no runoff election associated with the special primary election. Republican nominees for the affected congressional districts will be determined solely by the results of the Aug. 11 election.

Candidates in the May 19 primary who won their primary or are in a runoff are not eligible to qualify for the special primary election unless they withdraw prior to qualifying.
