Primary elections 2026: Dates to know ahead of June runoffs in Baldwin County

Posted

In Alabama, candidates must earn over 50% of the vote to win a primary election. After the election on May 19, eight races advanced to runoffs because no candidate received a majority of the vote.

These races include both parties' elections for the U.S. Senate and the Republican races for attorney general, lieutenant governor, commissioner of agriculture and industry, Public Service Commission Place 2, Baldwin County Commission District 4 and State House of Representatives District 95. Runoffs will be held Tuesday, June 16.

“If you did not vote in a political party's primary election and would like to vote in the primary runoff election, you may choose which political party's primary runoff election you would like to vote in,” according to information first reported in the Gulf Coast Media Voters Guide.

For those of you planning on hand-delivering your voter registration, Friday, May 29, is the last day to do so.

Moving forward, citizens must register to vote online for the primary runoff election by midnight on June 1, which is also the last day voter registration forms can be postmarked.

For Alabama voters requesting absentee ballots for the primary runoff, you must submit mailed applications by June 9 or return applications in person by June 11.

Absentee ballots that are returned in person are due by the close of business on June 15, while mailed absentee ballots have to arrive by noon on Election Day to be considered.

Emergency absentee voting applications are allowed after the absentee ballot deadline, but no later than 5 p.m. on the day before the election, June 15.

“It is recommended to mail in your absentee ballot application and absentee ballots at least two weeks before the deadline for county absentee election managers to receive them,” Secretary of State Wes Allen reminded voters in a recent press release.

Something important for absentee voters to note is that “an absentee ballot cannot be counted unless the affidavit is notarized or has the signatures of two witnesses. With that said, electronic or remote notarization is not permitted,” according to information first reported in the Gulf Coast Media Voters Guide.

Before voting either in person or requesting an absentee ballot, voters are required to present a valid form of photo identification.

Unlike in some municipal elections, everyone in the county votes for each county’s commissioner, no matter which district they live in.

According to unofficial tallies, 19.2% of Baldwin County’s registered voters participated in the primary elections.
