Prepare a homemade apple pie with minimal effort

Living in Georgia for almost 25 years, it was easy to learn to cook with apples. A trip to north Georgia became an annual event for us, always to get a bushel or two of fresh apples.

I always prepared and froze pies; we enjoyed fresh apple pies any time during the year.

When buying apples, fresh is always best; next I prefer frozen and then canned. If you use canned apples, check the amount of sugar, you may want to compensate for the amount of sugar you use in this recipe. This recipe is easy to make, great to freeze and always enjoyed by all.

This easy-to-make Deep Dish Apple Pie is on page 110 of my cookbook, “Love to Cook,” which I wrote and published in the ‘90s.

Deep Dish Apple Pie

Ingredients

  • 8 tart apples
  • ¾ cup sugar
  • ¼ cup light brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon nutmeg
  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • 1 9-inch pie shell
  • 1 9-inch deep-dish pie shell
  • 1 egg
  • 3 tablespoons milk

Preparation

Preheat oven to 400 degrees.

Combine all dry ingredients. Add apples and mix thoroughly. Pour into the deep-dish pie shell.

Dot top with butter; cover with second pie shell.

Mix egg and milk together; brush top of pie with egg mixture. Pierce top of pie with knife several times to allow steam to escape. Bake pie for 1 hour or until crust is golden brown.

Tip: Sometimes, the frozen prepared pie shells will have a crack. Take your fingers, wet with a drop or two of water and push the crack together. Also, wet your fingers to crimp the two pie shells together after placing the regular pie shell on top.

From the scriptures

Spiritual food is essential for all of us, as well as physical food. We should nourish our mind and feed our spirit daily just as we feed our body. To memorize a weekly Bible Verse is a fabulous spiritual food. Try it, and you will see how easy it is to memorize scripture.

Our memory verse for this week is: "For the Lord gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding." Proverbs 2:6
