Power outages affect south Baldwin County

Posted

Residents of South Baldwin County found themselves without power for the second time in two days on Wednesday.

Electricity that is supplied by Baldwin EMC was out for a considerable amount of time Tuesday, and residents were scrounging around for flashlights 24 hours later.

Tuesday’s loss of power was caused by an outage that hit the south Foley substation. It resulted in a fifty-five minute outage that affected 7,500 customers, according to Baldwin EMC. This outage impacted the Walmart in Foley, and the Tanger Outlet Center, forcing Starbucks there to close until power was turned back on.

Wednesday’s outage impacted a considerably larger area. Substations in Foley, Silverhill, Gulf Shores, and Magnolia Springs were without power for a time. The 29,000 customers who experienced the power outage were only without power for ten minutes according to Baldwin EMC.

Karen Moore with Baldwin EMC said that the two outages were not related to each other. Both outages were caused when the transmission supplier that is used experienced an outage that impacted the power supply.
