The Alabama Gulf Coast Area Chamber of Commerce recently announced Derek Capsis will be the 40th Annual National Shrimp Festival poster artist.
Derek is a native of Ohio, but has called Baldwin County his home since 1992. After serving in the Navy, he attended the Academy of Art and the University of Cincinnati, receiving his certificate in commercial art and illustration.
Derek’s experience is as colorful as his artwork. Derek has worked as a designer of greeting cards; designed art for major league sports associations such as the Cincinnati Reds and Colorado Rockies; worked with advertising agencies; and now repairs, restores, and custom paints furniture.
With the Festival celebrating its 40th year, the 2011 poster represents a somewhat nostalgic theme. Showcasing a vintage car full of anticipated Festivalgoers, the poster was designed to capture the excitement of taking a trip to the beach.
“For many families, the Shrimp Festival is an annual tradition,” said Ron Kutter, festival chairman, “and this year’s poster reminds you to get back to the beach.”
And that is exactly what the event organizers want you to do. Plans are underway to include a sportsman’s outdoor section, further develop the Children’s Activity Village, and of course book great musical entertainment.
The 2011 Shrimp Festival will be held on the public beaches of Gulf Shores from Oct. 13-16. And as the Festival boasts, there really is something for everyone!
The official 2011 40th Annual National Shrimp Festival poster is now on sale at the Chamber office or at www.nationalshrimpfestival.com. Unsigned copies are available for $20 and signed and numbered copies are $35 each.
