Portabella's in Foley reopens under new ownership

Posted

Portabella's in downtown Foley is once again open after having closed earlier this summer.

The business has been purchased by Tatana Peek, an employee of Portabella's for 12 years, along with Lenka Smitherman and Jaroslav Marek. Much of the menu has remained essentially the same, with Peek telling GCM that all the employees from previous ownership have stayed on for the reopening of Portabella's.

Portabella's in Foley has gone through somewhat of a revolving door of ownership in recent years, having previously served the Foley community for ten years before closing for the first time in March 2023. Later that year, the establishment was reopened by Pam and Rich Lee, with Rich bringing over 40 years of culinary and management experience that includes stints in Panama City, Florida and New Orleans, Louisiana. The couple would later open Safari & Vine, located at the Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo in Gulf Shores.

On July 9, it was announced on the Portabella's Facebook page that the establishment, along with Safari & Vine, would be closing. Pam Lee told GCM in previous reporting that they would meet with an attorney to discuss their sale options for Portabella's and that their employees were interested in purchasing the business if they got the money to do so.

"We are heartbroken to say that we have to close Portabellas and Safari & Vine. We were hoping that things would turn around soon, but unfortunately, we ran out of time and money," the Lees wrote in a Facebook post on the restaurant's page.

On Aug. 6, it was announced on the Facebook page that the restaurant would continue under new ownership. They have since created a new Facebook account to reflect the change.

"Yes, it's true! Portabella's will go on!" the post stated. "Same staff, just missing Chef Rich and Pam (Lee). The chefs on the line are the same guys that make everything with love! And Tana, Lenka and family now will own this lovely restaurant! We are so happy and excited for the next chapter of Portabella's."

The newly reopened Portabella's is open Tuesday through Thursday from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. and on Friday through Saturday from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m.
