DAPHNE, Ala. — Radio personality Scott O’Brien, who gained prominence as a DJ on WABB 97-Rock, among others, in the 1980s, died Saturday, Dec. 11, at his home in Daphne, after a long battle with cancer. He was 61.
He was a well known radio personality in both Pensacola, Fla., and Mobile, beginning his Mobile career in August 1975. Born Robert S. Griffth, his on-air name was Scott O’Brien, and he signed off daily by telling his listeners to “Feed the birds!”
He worked at WABB Radio, G100, 95KSJ, News Radio 710, 92ZEW, and Sports Radio 105.5. He also did public address announcing for the University of South Alabama Jaguars basketball and football games, the Senior Bowl, the Mobile Revelers and at Ladd- Peebles Stadium for over 25 years. He was involved with numerous local charities and coached little league baseball for 12 years.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Don and Irene Griffith; and a brother, Steve Griffith, all from Pensacola, Fla.
Survivors include his wife, Paula Pond Griffith; daughter, Lindsey Nicole Griffith (Blake Boswell); son, Robert Alexander “Alex” Griffith; one grandson, Aiden Brooks Griffith; two brothers, David Edward Griffith of San Antonio and Donald John “Jack” (Leslie) Griffith of Jacksonville, Fla.; numerous nieces and nephews.
