Popping out flavors on the Eastern Shore: Annie's Gourmet Popcorn nods to owner's upbringing near Redenbacher

DAPHNE — For popcorn lovers on the Eastern Shore, Annie's Gourmet Popcorn is the perfect place to satisfy your cravings.

Owner Ann Walker is originally from Northwest Indiana, where she grew up 45 minutes from Orville Redenbacher's farm. Having lived in Daphne for the past six years, she wanted to bring a part of the popcorn culture she experienced with her for others to enjoy.

Located at 10185 County Road 64, the business is a family affair. Walker receives help from her two children, her son, Daniel, who works at the store, and her daughter, Molly, who helps run their pop-up shops at events. They pop their kernels in-store every day throughout the week, using sturdy mushroom kernels — a type of kernel that pops into a large, dense ball shape that is less prone to crumbling when tossed in glazes — with all their seasonings coming straight from seasoning mills.

Walker said they pop around 300 pounds of kernels a week, adding that you won't find a single kernel unpopped due to how frequently they sift their popcorn.

When it comes to flavor, they brainstorm different ideas together.

"I was a kindergarten teacher for four years and then part of that I worked in ERs off and on for about 15 [years]," Walker said. "I think especially being in kindergarten, you get creative because being a teacher, you always think of different things and different ideas, just brainstorming."

One of her ideas was a "Lady Popcorn" collection of flavors inspired by the "Bridgerton" television series, which Walker said came from a dream.

"I woke up at 3 in the morning and I was like, 'Oh, you know what we could do?' and I wrote it down," Walker said.

More recently, her son, Daniel, came up with the idea of spicing up their dill pickle flavor.

"Everybody likes dill pickle, so he's like, 'Why don't we heat it up and see what it does?'" Walker said.

No matter what you are in the mood for, Annie's Gourmet Popcorn has something for everyone. From the classic movie theater style to sweet flavors such as buttery caramel, cotton candy, honey, cake batter, key lime and cheesecake or savory and spicy flavors like jalapeno cheddar, cheddar Cajun, cheesy ranch, beer can chicken and cheesy burger.

Each popcorn is available in different sizes, ranging from snack-sized bags to bigger bags for larger groups (or if you just like hoarding pounds of popcorn for yourself). It starts with small, which holds six cups of popcorn, all the way up to mega, which holds 110 cups. All their flavors are also available to sample in-store.

"Popcorn is happy. It's fun," Walker said. "We do a lot of popcorn bars and things, so if somebody's planning for an event, in a way, we get to be part of that event, so that's exciting, and just every day when people come in, it's exciting to see people try stuff because I love when they're like 'Oh, man!' That's exciting because it's something you created, so I think that's the best part."

Annie's Gourmet Popcorn is open Tuesday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
