GULF SHORES, Ala. -- Gulf Shores Police Department detectives are asking for the public’s help in locating the motorist responsible for a horrific hit-and-run that killed 53-year-old Michael J. Hoeft of Gulf Shores.
This afternoon, police detectives were looking for a Ford Explorer with factory-installed fog lights. The Explorer should have damage to the right (passenger side) head light and fog light.
On Feb 21 at 6:14 p.m., Gulf Shores Police and Fire responded to a traffic collision in the 500 block of County Road 4 East. Evidence at the scene indicated that a motorist was traveling west on County Road 4, where it struck Hoeft as he was riding his bicycle. Hoeft was wearing reflective clothing and his bike was equipped with lighting as well as reflective flags.
The motorist failed to stop to render aid or to provide identification. The impact of the collision caused Hoeft to sustain life-threatening injuries. He died on Wednesday, Feb. 22.
GSFD rescue personnel assisted Hoeft at the scene and he was transported to the hospital by helicopter.
The motorist was not identified and detectives have not identified a make or model of the vehicle. The vehicle will have fresh damage to the front on the passenger or right side.
