DAPHNE - A Daphne man has been charged with four counts of capital murder after he was accused of killing four people on Wednesday, Feb. 22.

The murders occurred in the Lake Forest division of Daphne. According to Daphne police, the suspect confessed to the crimes and an earlier connection to a criminal mischief charge that may be connected to the deaths.

At a news conference held Thursday night, police said Jared Tarant Smith-Bracy, 21, admitted to the killings.

According to police, three of the victims were related to Smith-Bracy, including his brother, 27-year-old Jeremy Smith; grandmother, 72-year-old Barbara Smith; and grandfather, 80-year-old Leonard Smith. The fourth victim was a family friend, 71-year-old Stella Glover.

Police say they believe the first three victims were shot in the backyard before the grandfather was killed in a bedroom.

Police say they believe the suspect then returned to bludgeon the other victims after shooting the grandfather.

Sgt. Jason Vannoy, of the Daphne Police Department, said 911 calls regarding the incident started coming in around 6 p.m. Wednesday.

Upon the police's arrival, Smith-Bracy was found hiding in a wooded area behind the home.

Police said they believe the killings may have been premeditated. Smith-Bracy was arrested that morning for damaging a door before being released on bond from the Daphne Jail around 5 p.m.

Police say they believe he got a ride back to the residence and allegedly stole the driver’s gun and headed into the house to begin the attack.

According to police, the driver called police and reported hearing gunshots and then waited at the police precinct to speak with officers.

Teresa Heinz, Baldwin County chief assistant sistrict attorney, said prosecutors are seeking a capital murder charge because there were more than two people killed as a result of one action.

“He was very cooperative in his interview,” Vannoy said. “He was very polite but showed no remorse.”

The case is set to be heard in circuit court, whileSmith-Bracy'a bond hearing is set for Friday, Feb. 24.
