Summerdale Mayor David Wilson and police chief Dwain Riebeling hope to work out the issues between the police department and the town soon.
The issues stem from miscommunication and ultimatums passed between the two parties. The issue started heating up on Tuesday night during the council’s work session, which was dedicated to the issue.
Wilson has approached the Baldwin County Sheriff’s office for a possible solution to what he called a department that has “backed him into a corner,” with their demands. Wilson said he only wanted to make sure the people of Summerdale had the police protection they needed, but he also said dissolving the Summerdale Police Department and replacing it with sheriff’s deputies was an option.
Wilson and the council heard from concerned citizens who stand behind their police department and want to see them stay in Summerdale.
The issue will be further discussed at next week’s council meeting, which has been rescheduled to Tuesday, Feb. 15 at 6:30 p.m. in observance of Valentine’s Day. Wilson, Riebeling, council member Ralph Clopton and the police officers have a meeting planned before the next council meeting.
