Playa closes after 5 years, Chef Bill Briand to focus on Fisher’s at Orange Beach Marina

The doors of Playa at Sportsman Marina have closed for the last time.

Hungry customers hoping to sink their teeth into fish tacos and street corn were greeted with a notice on the door Monday, Oct. 2, that stated the restaurant was closing permanently effective immediately.

Gulf Coast Media reached out to Playa for confirmation of the closure Wednesday, Oct. 4, just before 5 p.m. but did not get a response.

At 7:20 p.m. Oct. 4, the Playa at Sportsman Marina Facebook page featured a farewell post that stated:

“We would like to first say how much we have greatly appreciated our Orange Beach and Gulf Coast community over the past five years.

Unfortunately, it is time to shut our doors for good. We have decided as a company to focus our talent and energy on our sister restaurant Fisher’s at Orange Beach Marina.

We cannot thank you all enough for the love and support! Who knows, maybe those favorite Playa specials will make an appearance at Fisher’s!

We love you all and hope to see you in the near future at Fisher’s.”

Playa was one of three restaurants led by chef Bill Briand and restaurateur by Bill Fisher. The flagship restaurant of the company is Fisher’s Upstairs at Orange Beach Marina, and the third restaurant is Fisher’s Dockside. Fisher’s Upstairs leans more toward fine dining and Dockside is a more casual establishment.

Briand cut his culinary teeth with two of the biggest names in the New Orleans culinary world, Emeril Lagasse and Donald Link. Briand and Fisher opened Fisher’s at Orange Beach Marina in 2013, which has received awards and accolades ever since. The restaurant has been named one of Southern Living’s Top Five Restaurants in the South, and Briand has five James Beard nominations for Best Chef in the South.

Fisher’s at Orange Beach Marina is at 27075 Marina Road, #300, Orange Beach.
