DAPHNE, Ala. — The Alabama Coastal Foundation wants volunteers to help in a tree planting at Yancey Branch in the Village Point Park.
Volunteers are needed from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, ACF Executive Director Angela Montgomery said.
Since its inception in 1993, the nonprofit, environmental organization has hosted annual tree planting events, except for last year, according to Montgomery.
This year, the foundation will target locations that need specific restoration efforts, Montgomery said.
The area has had environmental and restoration work done to the Yancey Branch stream, Wetland Resources Contractor Gena Todia said.
When the city worked on a flooding problem in the area, more land was cleared than needed, Todia said.
“We are coming back and replanting those areas,” she said.
“The planting will help stabilize the shoreline and surrounding land and replace lost habitat,” Montgomery said.
“We are putting back the native trees that we already know grow there,” Todia said.
Todia and other engineers surveyed the surrounding areas to determine native species and decided to plant those species in the barren areas, she said.
A crew yesterday started planting trees and shrubbery from a Florida nursery in other areas around the stream.
Volunteers will plant the vegetation in two areas just off the main road that the former engineer used to access the area, Todia said.
They will plant sweet bay magnolias, bald cypresses, Virginia willow and button bush among others, according to Todia.
Once planting is completed and the coverage that developers want is achieved, only routine monitoring will be needed, according to Todia.
Volunteers will meet at the Village Point Park pavilion at 9 a.m.
