FAIRHOPE, Ala.—Taylor LeDrew got the pitching win and got to thank herself after driving in the winning Fairhope run in the bottom of the 10th inning Tuesday for a 2-1, Class 6A Area 3 win over visiting Robertsdale.
The Pirates improved to 8-6-1 overall, 3-1 in area play while the Golden Bears dropped their first league game (1-1) and fell to 11-10 overall.
The freshman Lady Pirate dueled it out in the circle with veteran Golden Bear senior pitcher Carmen Vivar. Both went the full three extra-inning distance and each held opposing batters to four hits. Vivar —a Shepherd University (West Virginia) signee— had 13 strikeouts in the loss. LeDrew, who had not pitched before this season, earned her second win in her second varsity start.
Fairhope took the early lead 1-0 in the bottom of the first and the Bears evened the score 1-1 in the top of the third. Each side left runners on until the FHS 1oth when Hannah Brown singled, reached second on a sacrifice bunt by Courtney Piesco and scored on LeDrew’s two-out single.
Robertsdale forced the bonus play when Austin Richardson singled in Beth Taylor who worked a walk off LeDrew—the only pass of the game issued by the ninth grader. Taylor and Vivar each had a base hit and Hali Thomas a triple for RHS.
Brown also scored the first Pirate run after her lead-off single, a single by Piesco and a passed ball to get home. Catherine Knight and Lauren Ponder also hit for FHS.
