FAIRHOPE – Fairhope turned the ball over three times in the first half against Robertsdale, but it didn’t matter in the end as the Pirates beat the visiting Golden Bears 42-7 in a Class 6A Region 2 game on Friday.
Fairhope quarterback Daryl Norris completed 13-of-17 passes for 187 yards and two touchdowns through three quarters on Friday.
Fairhope’s standout running back Jamal Woodyard did not play in the game. The Pirates filled Woodyard’s spot with two backs in Harvey Mitchell and Clifton Johnson, who had two scores each.
The Pirates improved to 7-0 overall and 4-0 in region play. Robertsdale fell to 0-7.
Robertsdale scored first after Fairhope fumbled at its own 26 on its second possession. After Fairhope was called for pass interference on two Caleb Sumrall to Brandon Ellis passes, Robertsdale had first-and-goal at the six. Fullback Larry Forney Jr. scored on a one-yard rush five plays later to give the Bears the early lead.
The Pirates drove 80 yards to tie the game on their next possession. Mitchell carried three times for 21 yards on the drive and scored from three yards out.
Fairhope fumbled again on its next possession, but the Pirates forced a Robertsdale punt and started at the Bear 44 with 9:36 to play in the first half.
Johnson scampered 37 yards for a touchdown, and the Pirates led 14-7.
Keith Douglas blocked a Robertsdale punt, which gave the Pirates the ball at the Bear 27.
Mitchell carried three times and scored from six yards out to put Fairhope up 21-7.
The Pirates got the ball back after Cadell Peterson picked off a Sumrall pass, but Fairhope fumbled the ball back to the Bears two plays later.
After stopping Robertsdale on four downs, Fairhope drove 48 yards in four plays for its next score. Norris hit Bobby Douglass for a four-yard touchdown pass with 6.8 seconds to play in the first half.
Fairhope led 28-7 at the break.
The Pirates added an 18-yard touchdown run from Johnson and a 12-yard touchdown pass from Norris to Lewis Hunter in the third quarter to close out the scoring.
Bo Morgan also had an interception for the Pirates in the third quarter.
Fairhope will host Region 2 foe Daphne on Friday.
Robertsdale will play at Monroe County.
