Pinzone's opens to serve Fairhope city workers

FAIRHOPE, Ala. — While many businesses in downtown Fairhope closed their doors on Tuesday and Wednesday because of the effects of Winter Storm Leon, one remained open to serve the city's public workers.

Pinzone's Italian Downtown Restaurant served a free lunch of pasta and pizza to Fairhope city workers.

"I run a lot so I ran up here and said 'if I can't open to the public I think I need to at least feed the city,'" Pinzone's co-owner Scott Dumas said. "They are out there working and I feel like us serving them is the right thing to do."

Dumas said that as of 1 p.m. Wednesday Pinzone's had served close to 200 city workers from public utilities to firemen to police officers.

"The city does such a great job for us in so many aspects that I just thought the least we could do is to help them," Dumas said. "Not only are we a restaurant but I think we are a service that people look to to provide something. Whether it is EMT's, firemen, police, they are all our neighbors."

Dumas said he had a couple servers and cooks who live nearby and were available to come to work and that he did not ask anyone to risk being on dangerous roads to come.

"They were all on board," Dumas said. "Cooks like to cook. They'd rather be here helping out than sitting at home."

A few other downtown Fairhope businesses like Buck's Diner, Page and Palette bookstore and Latte Da coffee shop were also open on Wednesday.
