Pink Heals day set for Saturday in Orange Beach

Posted

ORANGE BEACH, Ala. – It will start with the simple joy that comes from seeing a fire truck. Multiplied many times over.

And it will end as a day of hope, survival, remembrance and a pledge to continue the fight.

This Saturday the Pink Heals Lower Alabama Chapter third annual breast-cancer awareness day is reviving the fire truck parade that was the hit of event in 2010.

“A lot of local fire departments are going to put a fire truck in the parade,” organizer Suzanne Moeller said. “It’s to symbolize the fire departments supporting the cause. It’s kind of a tradition we started the first year we did this three years ago. We’re going to keep that tradition going.”

The parade rolls at 11 a.m. and the star of this show will be Orange Beach Fire and Rescue’s own pink fire truck, Cindy. The first year the Pink Heals Tour rolled into town with a passel of pink trucks, all named after firefighters’ wives who lost their battle with breast cancer.

Cindy is named after an Orange Beach firefighter’s wife. The original truck, Tonya, is based in Phoenix, Ariz., and operated by the Guardians of the Ribbon, the group that operates the Pink Heals Tour.

“It’s just going to be Cindy this year,” Moeller said. “The tour is not going to be coming through this area anytime soon and we kind of wanted to make this our third annual event and do our own thing. Not to take anything away from the Pink Heals Tour, but to celebrate on its own.”

The parade will start near the Orange Beach Events Center at The Wharf, head to Main Street at The Wharf, then south to Canal Road. From there the parade heads east to the Sportsplex where the trucks will roll up on a day’s worth of activities.

“The biggest thing that everybody liked was bringing back the fire truck parade that everybody was excited about,” she said. “It’s just nice to see that much support from all the fire departments and kind of nice to see all the fire trucks in one area without there being a big emergency.”

Moeller expects the trucks to arrive around noon, punctuated by the landing of LifeFlight at the Sportsplex.

“After that it will be just sort of a free-for-all,” she said. “There’s going to be a lot of kids’ activities, there’ll be health care professionals that will have booths where they’ll be answering questions and just kind of giving out information to people that may need it or may want it if they don’t know where to get the information, where to call. There will be free information out there about health care and screenings and things like that.”

A variety of vendors will be on hand with at least part of their proceeds donated to breast-cancer research.

“Reflections hair salon will be out there doing hair extensions and things for people with proceeds being donated,” Moeller said. “West Beach Grille is going to be out there providing some food for us, cooking some hamburgers. They’re going to be selling the burgers to benefit us.”

A variety of entertainment will also be available.

“Larry from Xray, a local band, will be playing all day,” Moeller said. “There’s going to be a pavilion set up for SEC football for the guys. We tried to pick something for everybody to get a bunch of people down there. Nobody’s going to be left out.”

The popular pink T-Shirts are also back and will be on sale, this time with more variety.

“We’re going to be selling our T-Shirts and some other things we’re going to be selling down there,” Moeller said. “We’ll have a selection of four or five different designs. We actually have a girl-cut shirt. We’ve sold men’s T-Shirts for the last three years and we’ve finally got some girl T-Shirts.”

In the end the day will also carry the message of survival, hope and the battle to secure a cure.

“We want everybody to understand that this is more support and information than anything,” Moeller said.
