Picking tonight's Baldwin high school football games

Baldwin County’s football teams head into the third week of the season tonight, and several of them face key region opponents in games that could go a long way to determining the area’s playoff races this season.

Perhaps the biggest game tonight will happen at Ivan Jones Stadium in Foley as the Lions (2-0) host No. 1 Daphne (2-0) in Class 6A Region 2 play at 7 p.m. Tonight’s other “big” game will happen in Mobile at St. Paul’s as Spanish Fort visits the Saints for a 5A Region 1 showdown. The Toros (1-1, 1-0) will be without 10 players who were suspended for their involvement in a fight during the Gulf Shores game last Friday.

In other 6A Region 2 action, Baldwin County (0-2) hosts McGill-Toolen (2-0), Fairhope (1-1) visits Satsuma (0-2) and Robertsdale (0-2) visits Williamson at Ladd-Peebles Stadium. In 5A Region 1, Gulf Shores (1-1) hosts LeFlore and in 3A Region 1 No. 6 Bayside Academy (2-0) hosts Montgomery Academy.

Daphne at Foley: All south Alabama eyes will be on Ivan Jones Stadium tonight as unbeaten Foley hosts No. 1 Daphne (2-0) tonight in 6A Region 2 play. Foley nearly took out Daphne last season before the Trojans’ 15-0 championship campaign, and Todd Watson’s Lions would like nothing else than to finish the job tonight. Daphne hasn’t been tested yet with big wins over Alma Bryant and Baldwin County. Foley escaped a tough test at Murphy in the opener, then handled Robertsdale last Friday. This one might be too close for comfort for Daphne. Prediction: Foley 21, Daphne 20.

Spanish Fort at St. Paul’s:  Class 5A’s defending champion Toros headed into the season with a host of players to replace after graduating 19 starters. They have an even bigger task this week as they try to replace 10 players who are suspended after their role in a skirmish against Gulf Shores last week. Spanish Fort will keep this one close, but the running of St. Paul’s junior Jordan Huff might be too much for a young and short handed Toro team. Prediction: St. Paul’s 28, Spanish Fort 24.

McGill-Toolen at Baldwin County: Baldwin County (0-2) has lost 14 straight games heading into tonight’s home game against McGill-Toolen (2-0). The Tigers stayed close to Daphne in the first half last week, but were outgunned in the second half, falling 45-7 in 6A Region 2 play. The Yellow Jackets came back from a 28-0 deficit to beat Fairhope 35-34 last week. Prediction: McGill-Toolen 28, BCHS 10.

Fairhope at Satsuma: The Fairhope Pirates (1-1) visit Satsuma (0-2) tonight in 6A Region 2 play. The Pirates are still reeling after a heartbreaking loss to McGill-Toolen last week, and Satsuma is struggling after losing numbers when Saraland High School opened this summer. Look for Fairhope’s high-powered offense, which has scored 35 and 34 points in its two games, to take its frustrations out on the Gators. Prediction: Fairhope 42, Satsuma 7.

Robertsdale at Williamson: The Robertsdale Golden Bears have struggled offensively in their first two games this season, but a visit to Ladd-Peebles Stadium against Williamson could get the Bears a mark in the win column. Robertsdale (0-2, 0-1) beat Williamson last season and should be able to do it again tonight. Prediction: Robertsdale 21, Williamson 13.

LeFlore at Gulf Shores: The Gulf Shores Dolphins (1-1, 0-1) suffered a tough loss against rival Spanish Fort last Friday, while the LeFlore Rattlers (0-2, 0-1) fell at home against Citronelle. Both offenses have struggled this season. Gulf Shores has produced just 22 points in two games, while LeFlore has scored 19. It might be close, but Gulf Shores has a defense that plays hard and ought to be able to stop a struggling LeFlore offense. Prediction: Gulf Shores 24, LeFlore 13.

Montgomery Academy at Bayside Academy: The Bayside Academy Admirals (2-0, 1-0) moved up to No. 6 in Class 3A after a win at powerhouse T.R. Miller last week. Montgomery Academy (2-0, 1-0) is unbeaten, but has wins over two teams that are a combined 1-3 on the season. Bayside beat Montgomery Academy 50-0 last season, and it could pull a similar win tonight. Prediction: Bayside Academy 38, Montgomery Academy 21.
